Founded in 2014,

Made Solid is a home goods and accessories brand based in Los Angeles California featuring original designs by partners Peter Maxwell and Mia. Our collections focus on Peter Maxwell’s leatherwork, but include beautiful beaded jewelry of Antique African Trade Beads created by Mia. Nearly all of our pieces are made by hand, by us, in our Los Angeles studio.

Our aesthetic is inspired by natural coastal California design, classic Western Americana, the simplicity of Japan and the traditions of friends from Mexico to West Africa.

90% of the leather we use is vegetable tanned saddle making leather from the Hermann Oak Tannery of St. Louis Missouri.
This leather is tanned in an all natural process, using a “tea” of only water and oak tree bark.
We use plant oils and beeswax to condition our work. Most leather colors are dyed or painted by hand using water-based, non-toxic leather specific dyes/paints.

All of the work we do is based in relationship and connection. Personal relationships are important of course - our retail location is stocked with pieces from friends’ studios and communities. However, the core of Made Solid is our connection to our own history, family and surroundings; where we come from and what we’ve done.
The name Made Solid references how we hope to live - making solid connections.

About Peter Maxwell (aka Max)

Max has family roots in Silverlake/Los Angeles, Leucadia/San Diego and the Willamette Valley/Pacific Northwest. He was exposed to the world of leather work and horseback riding at a young age. The basics of saddle making learned as a child are the foundation of all Made Solid leather pieces made today.
Max didn’t go to design school, instead he focused on cross cultural communications in school. He then worked with the homeless population of Los Angeles as a social services professional for close to 20 years.
He credits years of skateboarding (since the 80s), djing (since the 90’s) and photography (since the 2000s) as major influences in his life.

About Mia

Mia is a native of Kumamoto Japan, on the island of Kyushu.
She has the unique ability to connect with people of all ages, genders and cultures, making friends everywhere she goes.
She genuinely loves to learn her friends’ histories and cultural backgrounds.
Mia is an independent thinker. Her design is clean and unique, influenced by all of her relationships.

Mia has lived Los Angeles for the past 20 years and now splits time between tokyo and LA.
