Yakisugi (aka Shou Sugi Ban) is a traditional Japanese wood preservation technique in which the surface of wood is charred and then treated with a hardening oil. No dyes or stains are used to achieve the black of the wood - it is solely the result of the burn process.
Yakisugi wood is naturally resistant to weather and pests.
For our stools, the frames are charred and finished in-house, to order.
All soot and ash are brushed and sanded away so that there is no transfer of residue from the finished piece. Due to the joinery construction of our stools, incidental, non-destructive cracking or separation may occur. We test each piece for structural integrity after it is burned. However because only the surface is charred any appearance is purely cosmetic and a feature of the finished piece.
*Our Charcoal Wood Wide Weave Stool is colored with a water-based stain rather than fire. Please note the difference in the two items.
