These Antique Bronze Rings (aka Manilla) from Nigeria have been used as currency throughout West Africa for centuries. There are many forms from throughout the region across a long timeline.
The style we use for this piece is typically from the 1800s. Each is unique, having been created by hand a very long time ago. We lightly clean each one that we use but do not strip the natural patina that has developed over the last two centuries.
We choose to use these pieces for their beauty, history and connection to our friends from LA’s West African Community. Made Solid is all about relationships and we do our very best to honor our friends’ histories. We work to support the people/cultures/communities that created these beautiful works.
